Summary

The closest thing to a smoking gun in PURSUE Release 01. Single archival photo from the Apollo 17 lunar surface (December 1972) showing three dots in a triangular formation in the lower right quadrant of the lunar sky, visible upon magnification. The Department of War has formally opened a re-analysis case, retrieved the original film, and committed publicly to the language “potentially the result of a physical object in the scene.”

Verbatim AARO Description

“As part of the review of historical UAP materials under PURSUE, DOW has opened a case to investigate the accompanying NASA photograph from the Apollo 17 mission, taken December 1972. The image contains three ‘dots’ in a triangular formation in the lower right quadrant of the lunar sky that is clearly visible upon magnification of the image. While this photo has been previously released and discussed by keen observers, there is no consensus about the nature of the anomaly. New preliminary US government analysis suggests the image feature is potentially the result of a physical object in the scene. Additionally, as part of this investigation, the government has obtained the original film from the Apollo 17 mission and the results of the full NASA and DOW analysis will be released when completed.”

Why This Case Stands Out

  1. The image was already in public circulation — it is not “newly declassified” in the strict sense.
  2. The release IS the government’s softening of language. “Potentially the result of a physical object” is the strongest non-deflationary commitment in the entire 162-file tranche.
  3. Original film has been retrieved. The phrase “obtained the original film from the Apollo 17 mission” implies access to material that has not previously been re-scanned or re-analyzed under modern techniques.
  4. AARO’s standard language elsewhere is “should not be interpreted as a conclusive indication.” Here it is “potentially the result of a physical object.” The shift is deliberate.

Companion Apollo Material in the Same Release

  • NASA-UAP-D2 (Apollo 17 voice transcript, December 1972) — three multi-period in-flight observations, including Cernan’s “intense light flashing between his eyes” comparable to a train headlight, and Schmitt’s exclaimed “flash on the lunar surface north of Grimaldi (crater).”
  • NASA-UAP-D5, D6 (Apollo 17 crew debriefings, January 1973) — Schmitt: “We had light flashes just about continuously during the whole flight when we were dark adapted.”
  • NASA-UAP-VM1–VM5 (Apollo 12 lunar-surface photos) — five archival images modified by the government with highlighted “areas of interest” containing “unidentified phenomena” above the horizon.

These flank VM6 with consistent crew testimony of sustained observable phenomena.

What Would Make This World-Changing

  • Full re-analysis result published.
  • Language shift from “potentially” to a definitive “is” or “is not.”
  • Identification of any non-natural candidate that is not a known instrument artifact, S-IVB stage debris, or paint flake.

None of those exist yet.

Skeptic Anchors

  • The astronauts themselves repeatedly speculated that observed phenomena were ice or paint fragments separating from the S-IVB stage, calling that assessment a “wild guess” but consistent with mundane explanation.
  • AARO’s 2024 historical record found “no evidence of extraterrestrial origin” for cases reviewed.
  • A triangle of three dots in a lunar-sky photo is geometrically simple and consistent with plausible non-anomalous explanations (lens artifact, three independent particles, etc.).

Open Questions

  • Timeline for the full NASA + DOW re-analysis publication.
  • Will the re-analysis be peer-reviewed, or stay inside the government chain?
  • Does access to “original film” mean original Hasselblad film stock, and if so what new techniques will be applied that prior reviewers (including independent observers) lacked?
