What It Is

The multi-decade public-policy effort to declassify and release government records on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), formerly Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs). The May 8, 2026 PURSUE tranche is the latest, largest, and most coordinated installment.

The Pattern (As of May 2026)

Three things keep happening:

  1. Expectations get pushed up by testimony. Congressional whistleblower hearings (2023, 2024, 2025) raised public expectations of imminent revelation.
  2. Documents arrive that meet a lower evidentiary bar. Sensor footage without metadata, eyewitness reports, decades-old memos.
  3. The official position holds. Pentagon and AARO restate that no investigation has ever confirmed extraterrestrial origin.

The gap between (1) and (2) and (3) is the disclosure cycle.

What “Unresolved” Actually Means

Per AARO and PURSUE methodology: “unresolved means the government has not made a definitive determination.” Lack of sufficient data, not evidence of anomalous origin. Most published cases in the May 2026 release fall in this category.

What Would Constitute Real Proof

The Tyson formulation: a physical specimen. An actual alien, “preferably alive,” walked out of Congress. Anything short of that leaves the question where it has been for decades, no matter how many documents are released.

Why Documents Cannot Settle the Question

  • Sensor imagery without metadata, scale, and platform context is over-interpretable.
  • Eyewitness testimony, even from astronauts and pilots, is the same evidentiary tier as the testimony that already failed to settle the question.
  • Decades-old memos describe what observers thought they saw, not what was there.
  • “Unresolved” cases lack the data to be resolved either way, which is not the same as evidence of something extraordinary.
